Youngs is the son of former Leicester and England scrum-half Nick Youngs, and the elder brother of current Leicester and England scrum-half Ben Youngs. Brought up on the family’s arable farm in Norfolk, Youngs combined the pace of footwork of a three-quarter allied with the aggression and physicality suited for front-row rugby. He played for Gresham's School and for England Schools, and also for Holt as a junior.

He started as a centre for Leicester Tigers, but after advice from then Tigers coach Heyneke Meyer, switched positions to become his country’s leading hooker.

Capped from Under-16s up to Under-20s, Tom earned an England Sevens call-up for the opening leg of the IRB World Series in Dubai in November 2007 and also helped England finish runners-up in the final event of the season in Edinburgh. He played in the IRB Under-19 World Championships in South Africa in 2005 and gained senior experience with Bedford in National One before returning to the Tigers squad.

Tom will be joining scrum half brother Ben in the 2013 British & Irish Lions squad.
