Sean Maitland was born in Tokoroa, New Zealand.  Half Scottish and of Samoan and Maori descent from his mother’s side, he is the cousin of New Zealand born, Australian Rugby Union Player Quade Cooper.

Maitland spent 2005 and 2006 in the New Zealand Schools team and was a member of New Zealand U19 World Cup winning side in 2007.

He won his first Scottish cap after a mere six appearances for his new club and became the first Scotsman to score a try on his RBS 6 Nations debut when he scored in the defeat against England in round one. He currently has five caps.
