Bowe started playing rugby at seven but he is also a former Monaghan minor Gaelic footballer. He comes from a sporting family with a sister who is an Ireland hockey international.

He played his schoolboy rugby with the Royal School Armagh at fullback and converted to wing whilst playing for Ireland at U21s. His form here lead to a call up to Ulster where he scored on his debut against Connacht where he stayed for five years before joining Ospreys in 2008-9 season.

Bowe made his Ireland senior team debut against the USA in November 2004. He missed the following 6 Nations campaign through injury (2005) but in recent seasons, under the new management of Declan Kidney, has made real impact with Ireland starting in all of the Grand Slam games in the 2009 championship.
