Educated at Park House School, Newbury and Oakham School, Rutland, Croft first picked up a rugby ball at eleven. He played for National One side Newbury RFC for five years before joining Leicester. He debuted for Leicester Tigers senior side a week after his 20th birthday in November 2005 against Gloucester.

His form at Tigers and at U18s Schools, U19s, U21s and Saxons impressed and eventually led to his first full cap as a first half replacement for James Haskell in the 24-13 victory against France in the 2008 RBS 6 Nations. He retained the Number Six jersey for the Scotland and Ireland games. He toured with the England team to New Zealand in the summer of 2008 but only came on as a second half replacement in the second Test in Christchurch.
During this season’s RBS 6 Nations he won man of the match in the 34-10 victory over France at Twickenham and then turned in another impressive display in beating Scotland the following week.
