Faletau was born in Tofua, Tonga. His father Kuli Faletau represented the Tonga national rugby union team as a lock and appeared in the 1999 Rugby World Cup. Toby attended South Gloucestershire and Stroud College as part of the college's successful rugby academy and received player of the year during his time at the college.

Toby was picked up by the Dragons from the Bristol Academy of Sport at Filton College. His talent was noticed immediately as he was put straight into the Dragons U20 squad and the Dragons Academy. 

Toby saw a meteoric rise to prominance during the Dragons 2010-11 season where his extraordinary form saw him pick up the the Young Player award for the Magners League, Welsh Rugby Writers association and WRPA.
