After attending Newcastle University, he began his club career at Newcastle Falcons. Parling became a first team regular in the 2005–06 season, winning the players' player of the year award. Parling captained Newcastle on several occasions during the 2006–07 season. He was the runner-up for the Gatorade Performance of the Guinness Premiership Season 2008–09.

Parling made his Tigers debut in a win over his former club in the opening home game of the new term. Named Newcomer of the Year by supporters in 2009/10, he ended the campaign with a call-up to the England tour to Australia and New Zealand.

Unfortunately he returned with a neck injury which counted him out of the opening stage of the new season and then, just two minutes into his first game back, he suffered a knee injury against Harlequins and was sidelined for the rest of the 2010/11 season.

Just four months later he made his debut for England Saxons in a win over Ireland A at Bath and his continued good form propelled him into the senior international reckoning.
